Welcome This site contains loads of information about the medical condition called Tourettes Syndrome. I have gathered together a number of interesting and hopefully informative articles from around the world about this serious condition Tourettes. What is Tourettes SyndromeTourettes was first reported in 1885 by Dr. George Gilles de Tourette. Tourettes is often inherited, but we don't fully understand the cause of Tourettes yet. There are methods of treating the symptoms of Tourettes, but at the moment, there is no known cure fore Tourettes Syndrome, although work continues around the world. Tourettes can be quite accurately described as a movement disorder and an neurological condition. Symptoms of Tourettes SyndromeThe symptoms of Tourettes are tics, repeated movements and sounds. These are chronic and involuntary. It is possible for a patient to suppress them for a period of time, but eventually, the Tourettes sufferer has to let them out. Even within the same person, the tics a Tourettes sufferer suffer vary a great deal. Treatment of Tourettes SyndromeThere is currently no cure for Tourette Syndrome. Most people cope with their tics and behaviours and require no medication. There are some medications which in some cases can cure the tics caused by Tourettes. However, they don't always work the same for everybody and there are often side effects e.g. weight gain. For some people who suffer from Tourettes, it is possible that Psychotherapy may help by exchanging one tic for another which is more acceptable. Also, some relaxation therapies may alleviate stress which would otherwise make the tics worse. |
